GMAP Today: Doutor Coffee Shops around Shinjuku Station

Doutor Coffee K.K.  operates many stores, with its Doutor Coffee Shop being the flagship brand. It also owns Excelsior Caffee, Cafe Colorado, Olive no Ki, Le Cafe Doutor and Mauka Meadows. Doutor Coffee is the largest coffee shop franchise, with over 1,420 locations nationwide. Did you know that the first shop was actually Cafe Colorado, which opened in Kawasaki in 1972? Doutor Coffee Shop didn’t actually launch until 1980. With the success of Starbucks, which opened its first Japanese shop in 1996, Doutor followed with the Starbucks ripoff, Excelsior, in 1999.

The mom and pop kissaten (coffee shop) has come a long way since the 1990s, in large part due to Starbucks and Doutor. One has to wonder what this industry will bring the next 10 years. In the meantime, enjoy a hot cup of coffee in one of the six Doutor Coffee Shops near Shinjuku Station.
