fachmesselogo BioFach Japan Organic Expo 2008: Sept 24 26

Japan is the world’s third largest natural/organic market and BioFach Japan is the only organic trade show in Japan. Although BioFach is primarily a trade show, it may be of interest for regular consumers as natural food, beverages, cosmetics, textiles, paper, etc. will be on display.

No longer a niche market, the natural/organic business now affects a wide range of industries. Whether a company is involved in food or packaging, consumers and companies are more willing to pay higher prices for safe, high quality products. So, go by Big Sight and check out the exhibitors’ displays.

Tourism officials from around the world will gather at Tokyo Big Sight this weekend to participate in the JATA World Tourism Congress & Travel Fair. The conference is great for those thinking of taking a trip abroad. Above are some photos from the fair.

The theme of the conference, which launched in 1977, is “Revitalizing the Japanese Market: Part 2.” But there will be a second theme – “Discovering New Strategies from Asia’s Travel Boom,” which will focus on the growing travel industry in Asia.

This year is the 150th anniversary of Japan opening its doors to the world, according to JATA, which is 5 years after Commodore Perry arrived in Japan with his “Black Ships.” I wonder if there is a company from the US by that name. That would be amusing.

Back to the expo. There will be a wide variety of exhibitions, with special emphasis on travel between Asian nations. Players in the travel industry will vie for the ever more sophisticated travelers in the region.

Many people know about The Visit Japan Campaign, which targets 10 million visitors to Japan by 2010. But many do not know that the Japanese Diet has passed an act to target 20-million Japanese to travel abroad by 2010, named The Visit World Campaign. I wonder if that counts the people in the finance industry leaving Japan in droves….

Even if you don’t participate in the event, there are many things for the family, such as a pool, family lounge, etc. Located between Omotesando and Shibuya, it is easily accessible by train. There is even parking space for those coming by car. So enjoy a day out with the family!

When: Sept 23 (Tuesday) Event is 14:00/16:00 but facilities open 10:00-17:30
Entrance Cost: 400yen/person (Age 3-18) / 500yen/adults

We Love Yamagata Beef!

Friday, September 19th, 2008

yamagata beef1 We Love Yamagata Beef!

A French restaurant in Tokyo Hilton has been accused of falsifying as Maesawa Beef from Iwate Prefecture with those from Yamagata Prefecture, according to Daily Yomiuri. See Story. The reason given for the switch by the head chef at Twenty One restaurant was because the two meats were of same quality. While that doesn’t excuse the restaurant for falsifying its menu, it does give praise to the quality of Yamagata Beef. Yeah!

Actually, there was another incident in 2002 where a subsidiary of Tokyo Department Store labeled Yamagata Beef as Matsuzaka Beef from Mie Prefecture. See Story.

So, if you want high quality Yamagata Beef, why not head over to Twenty One and order some. Maybe they still have some. Maybe at a discount? Just make sure they are from Yamagata!
