GMAP Today: Embassy of Spain

Congratulations to Spain on winning the world championships in basketball! Spain won 70-47 against a Greek team coming fresh off a victory over Team USA. They did it without their star player and MVP of the tournament, Pau Gasol, the seven-foot player for the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies. He broke his foot with about a minute left in a 75-74 semifinal win over Argentina.

I’m sure there were some wild celebrations by the Spaniards in Japan, so forgive them if they come in a bit hungover today. This was Spain’s first world championship. I wonder if many Spaniards watched the game from their embassy. Embassy of Spain Map

Some statistics. The leading scorer of the tournament was China’s Yao Ming, who averaged 25.3 points, followed by Germany’s Dirk Nowitzki 23.2 and Spain’s Pau Gasol 21.3. The US team won the bronze by defeating Argentina 96-81. This was the third consecutive victory for an European team. Yugoslavia won in 1998 and 2002. The next tournament will be in Turkey in 2010.
